The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Kaduna Eboigbodin, who reportedly passed away following an altercation with police officers at a checkpoint in Benin City.
Command Spokesman, Moses Yamu, announced on Wednesday that the Commissioner of Police, Umoru Ozigi, has ordered an immediate probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred on Monday along Upper Sakponba Road.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that Eboigbodin was driving with his wife when police officers stopped their vehicle for a routine check. Although Eboigbodin presented his vehicle particulars as requested, a discrepancy in the documents reportedly led to accusations by the officers, who alleged that the vehicle was stolen.
The exchange escalated into a heated argument when Eboigbodin refused to comply with an order to drive to the police station, demanding clarification of his alleged offence. During the altercation, Eboigbodin reportedly became agitated and collapsed on the spot.
According to sources, the police officers fled the scene, leaving Eboigbodin’s wife to rush him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Reacting to the incident, Yamu stated that the Edo Police Command received the news with great concern and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased. Commissioner Ozigi emphasized the importance of maintaining professional conduct and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Yamu conveyed the CP’s message, saying, “The Commissioner of Police extends heartfelt condolences to the widow, family, friends, and associates of the late Kaduna Eboigbodin. He also prays for the repose of his soul.”
He further noted, “The Edo State Command remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice prevails in every situation. The cordial working relationship between the police, civil society organizations, and the NLC will be safeguarded as we proceed with the investigation.”
The command has assured the public of transparency and accountability in addressing the incident.
