A 400-level student of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, Adéọlá Adeyemo, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly causing the loss of an 11-year-old pupil’s right eye. The victim, Alao Idera, a primary six pupil of Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko, sustained the injury in an incident that occurred around 3 p.m. during school hours.
According to the police, Adeyemo, who was undergoing her teaching practice at the school, was holding a cane when Idera unexpectedly rushed toward her. The cane inadvertently pierced the pupil’s right eye. The injured pupil was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for emergency treatment, but doctors had to surgically remove the damaged eye.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as an unfortunate accident.
Odutola said, “The teacher did not flog the student, nor was there any misbehavior on the part of the child. The teacher was holding a cane, preparing for an end-of-year party, when the child rushed toward her, and the cane accidentally caused injury to the child’s eye. The 11-year-old underwent surgery, during which her right eye was removed.”
The police immediately arrested Adeyemo following the incident. However, the suspect reportedly attempted to take her own life upon learning about the pupil’s condition but was rescued and taken to the hospital by the police.
“After learning that the pupil’s eye had been removed, Adeyemo tried to ingest harmful substances. The police intervened, rushed her to the hospital, and she is now in a stable condition,” Odutola added.
This incident is the second involving a teacher and a student in Ogun State in recent times. In a separate case, Azamdjo Elijah, a teacher at Obada Grammar School, was arrested following the death of Senior Secondary School 2 student Monday Arijo. Elijah allegedly subjected the student to 162 frog jumps and administered 24 strokes of the cane, which reportedly led to the student’s death.
The police have launched thorough investigations into both cases to ensure justice is served and to address concerns about safety and discipline in schools.
