The Nasarawa State Police Command has launched an intense search operation to rescue Dr. Joseph Haruna Kigbu, a former member of the House of Representatives, and his wife, who were abducted by gunmen on Monday evening. The attack, which occurred along the Nunku-Gwantu axis, also claimed the life of a police officer escorting the ex-lawmaker.
Kigbu, who represented Lafia, Obi, and Keana Federal Constituency, and his wife were ambushed while en route to Jos, Plateau State, at approximately 6 pm. Eyewitnesses reported hearing sporadic gunfire as the attackers carried out their assault.
The slain police officer, who reportedly resisted the attackers, was later found by local residents. The area where the incident occurred, straddling Nasarawa and Kaduna States, is notorious for criminal activities, raising further concerns about the safety of travelers and residents.
Assistant Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yusuf Idi, confirmed the abduction and the killing of the officer, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada, has mobilized tactical units in collaboration with the military and other security agencies to secure the release of the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The CP has directed tactical teams to collaborate with the military and other security agencies to ensure the criminals are arrested and the victims are rescued unhurt,” Idi stated.
The attack has heightened anxiety among residents in the region, who have long been plagued by frequent incidents of banditry and abductions. A local resident, speaking anonymously, lamented the deteriorating security situation and called for immediate government intervention.
“Insecurity here has become a major concern. We appeal to the government to deploy more security personnel to this region so we can live peacefully and sleep without fear,” the resident said.
Authorities have vowed to intensify operations in the area to restore peace and ensure the safety of residents and travelers. Meanwhile, the search for Kigbu and his wife continues, with hopes for their safe return.
