The Federal Government has initiated a free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus service in Abuja to alleviate the burden of transportation costs for residents of the capital city. The CNG buses began operations on December 2, 2024, and will offer free rides for 40 days, ending on January 6, 2025.

The buses operate on major routes connecting the suburbs of Abuja, including Mararaba, Eagle Square, and Berger bus stop. This initiative, part of the Presidential CNG Initiative, was announced through a video shared on its X (formerly Twitter) page.

Last week, the Ministry of Transportation handed over 15 CNG-powered buses to three major transport unions: the National Road Transport Workers Union (NRTW), the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN). The aim is to ease the financial strain of transportation for residents amid high costs.

Passengers who have benefitted from the service expressed gratitude and optimism. Fatima, a commuter, said, “I just boarded a CNG bus going to Mararaba, and we were asked not to pay. I hope it will continue for long. I like it very much; I know this is the beginning of good things for Nigerians.”

Another passenger, Blessing, remarked, “If they’re doing like this, we’ll be happy. After this one, let them bring down the price.”

The free CNG bus service underscores the government’s commitment to addressing transportation challenges while promoting the adoption of eco-friendly energy solutions. This initiative is expected to provide temporary relief to commuters and demonstrate the potential of CNG-powered transportation in Nigeria.
