TikTok has introduced new restrictions on appearance-altering photo filters for users under 18, following a study examining the impact of online platforms on teenagers’ self-identity and relationships. The study, conducted in partnership with UK nonprofit Internet Matters, highlights the effects of digital authenticity on young people’s well-being.

The findings, published in a report titled “Unfiltered: The Role of Authenticity, Belonging, and Connection,” underline the positive role online platforms play in fostering a sense of belonging and connection. Both teenagers and parents acknowledged the benefits of being authentic online and noted the uplifting effects of digital interactions on young users’ mental health.

However, the report raised concerns over certain photo filters, particularly those that subtly alter physical appearance. Parents and teens expressed worries about the impact such filters might have on self-image and confidence. While playful filters like those adding animal ears were viewed as harmless, filters that modify physical features sparked significant concerns.

In response, TikTok has announced new measures to mitigate potential harm. Appearance-altering filters will now be restricted for users under 18. Additionally, TikTok will introduce greater transparency by providing details about how a filter changes a user’s appearance before it is applied.

The platform also plans to refresh its creator resources in the TikTok Effects House, encouraging developers to consider the unintended consequences of their filters.

TikTok emphasized that these changes aim to foster a culture of authenticity and respect, ensuring a supportive environment where young users feel encouraged to express their true selves without undue pressure to conform to unrealistic standards.

By addressing these issues, TikTok continues its commitment to enhancing the well-being of its diverse user base while promoting a safer and more empowering digital experience.
