The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to hold by-elections in January 2025 to fill the vacant seats of four National Assembly members who passed away in 2024.
The 10th Assembly, inaugurated in June 2023, lost four members: Ekene Adams (Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Labour Party), Musiliudeen Akinremi (Ibadan North Federal Constituency, APC), Isa Dogonyaro (Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, APC), and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah (Anambra South).
Isa Dogonyaro died on May 10, 2024, in Abuja after an undisclosed illness. Ekene Adams passed away on July 16, 2024, at the age of 39, while Musiliudeen Akinremi and Ifeanyi Ubah died on July 10 and June 28, 2024, respectively.
A top INEC official confirmed that preparations are underway for the by-elections, which aim to fill these seats left vacant by the lawmakers’ demise.
Earlier in 2024, INEC conducted by-elections across nine states in February to replace legislators who had either resigned or passed away following the 2023 General Elections. These elections covered two senatorial districts, four federal constituencies, and three state constituencies.
INEC’s spokesperson, Sam Olumekun, declined to comment on further details regarding the upcoming by-elections.
