Gunmen ambushed a police convoy in Ubakala, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, killing one officer and injuring another on Sunday night. The incident occurred just four days after unidentified gunmen fatally shot two soldiers at a checkpoint in Umuopara, near the Abia-Imo border.
The targeted convoy belonged to one of Abia State’s federal lawmakers, though the lawmaker was not present at the time of the attack. The ambush occurred around 9 p.m., with the gunmen blocking the road and opening fire on the officers.
Details of the Attack
Sources revealed that the assailants, dressed in black and wearing police jackets, stopped the convoy, which consisted of two policemen and a driver traveling in a Toyota Corolla. Despite the policemen identifying themselves as law enforcement officers, the attackers immediately opened fire.
One policeman was killed on the spot, while the other officer sustained critical injuries and is feared to have succumbed.
Quick Police Response
As the attack unfolded, police officers from the nearby Ubakala Division reportedly arrived, engaging the gunmen in a firefight. However, the attackers managed to flee the scene.
Official Response Awaited
At the time of reporting, efforts to reach the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, were unsuccessful, as she had not responded to messages seeking confirmation and additional details.
This attack comes amid rising security concerns in Abia State, following similar incidents that have left residents and security forces on edge.
