Four individuals, including a soldier, have reportedly been killed in violent attacks attributed to suspected cultists in the North Bank area of Makurdi, Benue State. The tragic incidents occurred between Thursday and Friday, with eyewitness accounts suggesting that innocent residents were caught in the crossfire of escalating cult clashes.

Details of the Incident

According to Nura Umar, Chairman of Operation Shara, a local vigilance group, the attacks began on Thursday night when a suspected cultist was killed in his home. The violence continued on Friday night around the BIPC area, where a soldier and two young men were fatally attacked by rampaging cult members.

Umar explained, “These cultists caused mayhem around 10–11 pm on Friday. A soldier and two boys lost their lives in the attack. The boys were not cultists but were unfortunately targeted by the attackers.”

Police Confirmation

The Benue State Police Command, while acknowledging the rising cult-related violence in North Bank, provided a different account. Police spokesperson Catherine Anene confirmed only one death, describing the victim as a young civilian.

“There were cult activities in North Bank, but I am aware of just one civilian casualty. Police operatives have been deployed to the area to restore calm,” Anene stated.

Escalating Cult Clashes

The North Bank area has recently witnessed a surge in violent clashes among rival cult groups, raising concerns about safety and security in the community. The attacks have left residents living in fear as the cultists continue to operate with impunity.

Local authorities and law enforcement agencies are under growing pressure to address the cult menace and ensure the safety of civilians in the area. Residents have called for heightened security measures and a more robust response to the escalating violence.
