The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed apprehension over procedural irregularities during the local government elections, including the late distribution of materials and the issuance of two result sheets instead of one at polling units. The party has called for an extension of the voting time, originally set to conclude at 2 p.m., to accommodate voters potentially affected by the delays.

Delayed Movement of Election Materials

Election officials were reportedly still collecting materials from the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) office in Abeokuta at 7:32 a.m., just moments before the scheduled 8:00 a.m. commencement of voting. This delay raised concerns about the timely arrival of materials in remote areas such as Ogun Waterside.

PDP’s Concerns Over Electoral Credibility

Speaking to journalists, the PDP’s state agent, Waliu Oladipupo, criticized the delay and irregularities, stating that such issues could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and disenfranchise numerous voters.

“Imagine somebody going to Ogun Waterside. Do you think they will get to their destination on time, having slated the election for 8 a.m.? I doubt the credibility of the election,” Oladipupo said.

Call for Time Extension and Transparency

The PDP has urged the electoral commission to extend voting hours to ensure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots. Additionally, the party emphasized the need for transparency in the collation and announcement of results.

“We want the time to be extended so that voters can vote. Secondly, they should ensure that the results are declared at the polling units. From the ward collation center down to the local government collation center, they should declare the party that wins,” Oladipupo added.

Potential Impact on Voters

The delays and irregularities could impact voter turnout and the overall integrity of the election process. The PDP’s concerns highlight the need for robust planning and prompt action by electoral bodies to ensure a credible and fair process in subsequent elections.
