Nigerian table tennis star Offiong Edem has announced her retirement from international competition after a remarkable 20-year career representing the country. The 37-year-old, who has participated in five Olympic Games and earned numerous accolades, revealed her decision on Thursday through a heartfelt statement on her social media platforms.
Expressing gratitude for her journey, Edem highlighted her plans to focus on mentoring young table tennis players and inspiring the next generation to surpass her achievements.
“A proud 5-time Olympian, I bid farewell to the national team. It’s time to explore new horizons and nurture young table tennis talents, inspiring the next generation to surpass my achievements,” she wrote. “I extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who’s supported me on this incredible journey: family, friends, and well-wishers. From humble beginnings in Bayside to international recognition, thank you.”
Born in Calabar, Edem has been one of Nigeria’s most decorated and consistent athletes. Over her illustrious career, she competed at multiple African Games, Commonwealth Games, and Olympic Games, establishing herself as one of Africa’s leading female players. Her stellar performances have helped elevate Nigerian table tennis to new heights on the global stage.
Among her numerous accomplishments, Edem won several gold medals at the African Championships, dominating continental tournaments and helping the Nigerian women’s table tennis team achieve significant success in team events.
