The Lagos State Government has intensified its efforts to eliminate illegal structures and environmental violations by demolishing 138 shanties along the Ajao Estate Canal. These makeshift dwellings were reportedly rented out to occupants for annual fees ranging from ₦60,000 to ₦100,000.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the operation on Friday via X.com, stating, “In continuation of concerted measures to reduce the scourge of environmental infractions and illegal encampment in public spaces, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, on Thursday demolished 138 shanties around the canal bank in Ajao Estate Canal where illegal occupants pay between ₦60,000 to ₦100,000 rent.”
This action follows a similar incident in May, where the government uncovered an apartment beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi, rented out for ₦250,000 annually.
The demolition is part of a broader initiative by the Lagos State Government to address environmental challenges and reclaim public spaces from unauthorized occupants. Such illegal settlements often contribute to environmental degradation and pose safety risks to residents.
The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, is a government agency responsible for maintaining a clean environment in Lagos and enforcing regulations against illegal structures and activities.
Residents are encouraged to comply with state regulations and avoid occupying or constructing unauthorized structures to promote a safer and more organized urban environment.
