The National Counter-Terrorism Centre on Thursday described the recently emerged terrorist group, Lukarawa, as a minor threat due to its limited membership of fewer than 150 fighters.

The group, operating primarily in Sokoto and Kebbi states, has been recruiting to bolster its numbers. According to the Defence Headquarters, Lukarawa infiltrated Nigeria’s northern regions from Niger Republic and Mali, particularly after the coup in Niger.

Speaking in Abuja, the Centre’s National Coordinator, Maj. Gen. Adamu Laka, sought to reassure Nigerians that the group’s activities pose minimal risk. He noted ongoing counter-terrorism operations aimed at swiftly neutralizing the group’s threat.

“The Office of National Security Adviser is fully in control,” Laka stated. “Their total number is not more than 150 to 200. The way this issue is being reported exaggerates the actual situation.”

He downplayed concerns about the group’s potential to expand its activities beyond its current locations, asserting that Lukarawa lacks the numerical strength to pose a significant threat to states like Kebbi, Sokoto, or Kaduna.

Laka also highlighted strengthened collaborations with neighboring countries and advanced intelligence operations to curb the group’s activities. He emphasized increased joint security operations, heightened surveillance in high-risk areas, and proactive measures to prevent recruitment and movement of fighters.

“Our intelligence agencies are working tirelessly to provide actionable intelligence,” Laka concluded. “We are committed to ensuring that Lukarawa does not grow into a significant security challenge.”
