Godwin Obaseki, the immediate past governor of Edo State, has embarked on a vacation for rest and medical check-ups following the completion of his second term on November 11, 2024. This was revealed in a statement by his media adviser, Crusoe Osagie, who noted Obaseki’s appreciation for the support he received from the people of Edo State and Nigeria during his tenure.
In his message, Obaseki expressed hope for Edo’s future and urged Edo citizens, both in Nigeria and abroad, to pray for continued peace and progress in the state and nation.
Ahead of the transition to his successor, Monday Okpebholo, Obaseki pardoned ten inmates with less than a year remaining on their sentences in Edo State correctional facilities. He also hinted at an anticipated inquiry from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claiming he received information that the commission plans to investigate him over alleged financial misconduct.
Speaking at the EdoBEST National Results-Sharing Session in Abuja, Obaseki alleged that petitions against him were politically motivated, possibly by individuals with vendettas. He emphasized that he had nothing to fear and had focused on reforms and developmental projects for the benefit of Edo State.
“I hear that the EFCC will pick me up next week after my tenure. Wherever they keep me, I’ll spend time doing research,” Obaseki remarked, maintaining his stance that his record is clear. He asserted his readiness to cooperate with the EFCC, adding, “If they call me, I can even turn myself in – I have nothing to hide.”
Obaseki’s vacation follows a tenure marked by initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Edo citizens and building what he considers legacy projects in the state.
