In a fresh wave of attacks, bandits on Sunday night torched maize crops on six farms in Kwaga and Ungwan Zako villages, Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area, Kaduna State. The incident, occurring only 48 hours after a peace dialogue facilitated by cleric Sheik Assadus Sunnah, has left the communities devastated.
Local sources confirmed that several hectares of harvested maize were set aflame along the Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna highway, including a six-hectare farm belonging to Malam Tanko. Expressing frustration, Tanko noted, “Our crops are our main source of livelihood. With the maize harvest season approaching, these attacks threaten our food security.”
Residents called on the government to take immediate action to protect the area. The Chairman of the Birnin Gwari-Niger Interboundaries Communities Association, Ishaq Usman Kasai, confirmed that members of the notorious gang led by Yellow Jamboros were behind the attack. Kasai urged the Federal Government to collaborate with state authorities to establish a robust national strategy against banditry, highlighting the urgent need for peace and security in the region.
Attempts to reach the Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer for comments were unsuccessful, and the state government had not yet issued an official statement at the time of this report.
