A Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, has publicly apologized to Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North/South in Abia State, following an altercation that occurred during a package delivery. In a video statement, Abuwatseya expressed regret for the incident, urging forgiveness from all those affected and calling for unity among Nigerians.

Reflecting on the misunderstanding with Hon. Ikwechegh, Abuwatseya apologized for any provocative remarks he made and encouraged Nigerians to avoid division based on religion, tribe, or region, emphasizing unity and being “our brother’s keeper.”

Abuwatseya’s apology came after Hon. Ikwechegh also issued a public statement on his Instagram account, acknowledging his own inappropriate actions during the altercation. The lawmaker apologized to Abuwatseya, the Nigerian Police Force, and the National Assembly, admitting his conduct fell short of the standards expected of a public servant, even if provoked. He revealed that the matter had been resolved through alternative dispute resolution, resulting in a mutual understanding.

The incident gained public attention after a viral video showed Hon. Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping Abuwatseya, at one point boasting about his influence and suggesting he could make the driver “disappear without a trace.” The video sparked widespread condemnation, prompting the lawmaker to issue his apology.

Following the backlash, Ikwechegh was charged in an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court and granted bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties. Both parties have since expressed their commitment to moving forward amicably, with Abuwatseya thanking his family and supporters for standing by him during this challenging period.
