Suspected terrorists launched an attack last Sunday on the residence of the elderly mother of Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) chieftain Hon. Segun Karunwi, located on Olatunji Ayinla Street in Wasimi, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The incident has created a wave of fear among local residents, with some contemplating relocation due to safety concerns.
According to reports, the assailants forcibly broke down the main door and two windows to enter the house. However, nothing was stolen, and fortunately, Karunwi’s mother, who is in her late 80s, was not home at the time, having gone to church just hours before the attack.
Karunwi, who is currently in the United States, expressed his alarm over the security situation in Ogun State and across Nigeria, urging Governor Dapo Abiodun and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the protection of lives and properties to prevent such incidents. “If my mother had been at home, she could have been killed or abducted,†he stated, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures, including increased personnel and equipment.
Chief Adewale Sodiq, Inspector General of OPC, also condemned the attack, commending Karunwi’s dedication to the group and calling on both state and federal governments to ensure the safety of citizens. “No excuse should be accepted for failing to protect lives and properties,†Sodiq stated, urging swift action to prevent similar attacks.
Chief Ismaila Ibikunle, the Baale of Erube, labeled the attack as an assault on the entire community and appealed to the Ogun State government for support. He also called on President Tinubu to fulfill his commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of Nigerians, as pledged during his inauguration.
The incident has highlighted growing security concerns in Ogun State, with community leaders stressing the urgent need for increased surveillance and security to protect vulnerable areas.
