The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has announced the safe release of Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, who was abducted during evening prayers at the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi-Agenebode, Edo State. Fr. Oyode was released around 7 p.m. on Wednesday in a village near Ajaokuta, Kogi State, following eleven days in captivity.
In a statement, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, the Diocese’s Director of Communications, conveyed the deep gratitude of Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia, Bishop of Auchi, to all those who offered prayers and support during the ordeal. He thanked Catholic faithful, supportive Nigerians both within and outside the country, and the various security forces, vigilante groups, and hunters who worked tirelessly to secure Fr. Oyode’s release.
Bishop Dunia also called on government authorities to address the growing security issues in Edo North Senatorial District and across Edo State. He urged proactive measures to restore peace and ensure the safety of citizens in their homes, on their farms, and during transit.
The release of Rev. Fr. Oyode has been met with relief and gratitude, though the incident underscores ongoing concerns about safety in the region.
