The Kaduna State government has extended support to 39 recently released #EndBadGovernance protesters, offering each of them ₦100,000 in cash, new smartphones, and other reintegration assistance. The reunion ceremony, held at Children Homes on Kauru Road, saw the protesters reunited with their families as Governor Uba Sani pledged to support their reintegration into society, provided they commit to lawful and constructive behavior.
Secretary to the Kaduna State Government, Abdulkadir Meyere, who represented Governor Sani, conveyed the governor’s commitment to helping the former detainees rebuild their lives. According to Meyere, those who have completed their tertiary education will have their credentials collected for potential employment opportunities. “Some of them will receive start-up capital for trading, others will be trained in skills, and some will be given job placements,” he said. However, Meyere clarified that the government would monitor the activities and behavior of the released protesters before extending additional benefits.
For effective tracking and monitoring, the state collected contact information, addresses, and next-of-kin details of all released individuals. Meyere also shared that the protesters underwent medical examinations and psycho-social counseling, emphasizing the need for them to positively contribute to society. Religious leaders, both Islamic and Christian, encouraged them to adhere to the principles of their faiths, avoid negative influences, and embrace a productive lifestyle.
Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu, also addressed the group, which included two minors aged 16 and 17, reinforcing the government’s commitment to their well-being. She urged the former detainees to serve as ambassadors of peace within their communities, discouraging any involvement in unlawful activities. “We want you to return to your families and spend quality time with them. We’ll invite you back for further training to help you build a productive future,” she added.
The support package, including smartphones to replace those lost during detention and ₦100,000 as a gesture of goodwill, marks the government’s broader effort to facilitate a positive reintegration for the young protesters.
