The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its dedication to the protection and well-being of Nigerian citizens residing in Libya. This statement comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued a ruling against the Libyan Football Association for its alleged mistreatment of the Nigerian football team during a recent Nations Cup qualifying match.
In an official statement released on Sunday, Ministry spokesman Eche Abu-Obe clarified that Nigerians in Libya are safe and experiencing no disruptions in their daily lives due to recent events. The statement read, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey that as of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities, following the verdict of the Confederation of African Football, which indicted the Libyan Football Association for their ill-treatment of the Nigerian team and officials while in Libya.”
The ministry reassured Nigerians that their government remains vigilant in safeguarding the rights and safety of its citizens abroad, emphasizing that the welfare of Nigerians overseas remains a top priority.
This announcement is intended to address concerns about potential repercussions following the CAF’s sanctions on Libya, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to upholding the safety and dignity of its nationals globally.
