Known fondly as “Maami” by her family, Omoladun was not only a cherished matriarch but a profound influence in the lives of her children, guiding them through their successful careers in the Nigerian film industry. Afolayan shared the heartbreaking news with his fans and friends on Instagram on Saturday, posting a series of touching photos that celebrate her life, including treasured moments with her grandchildren.

In his post, Kunle wrote, “It is hard to accept, but she surely lived a good life👼. Our mother, Maami Omoladun Ayanladun Afolayan, has gone to rest. (1943-2024).” The filmmaker added a heartfelt request, asking followers to remember the family in their prayers, noting her enduring legacy through her children and grandchildren, “Omo re a gbeyin gbogbo wa,” which means, “Her children will be her lasting legacy.”

Kunle Afolayan’s brother, actor Gabriel Afolayan, also expressed his grief on social media. Reflecting on his deep connection with his mother, he shared, “Home is not cool. We lost a very dear one. You’d be greatly missed, big mummy (Iya Oyo). We all love you to bits. I will miss my gist and dance partner. Rest on #maami.” He paid tribute to her affectionate nickname, “Iya Oyo,” a nod to her hometown roots and loving relationship with the family.

The Afolayan family, which has established itself as a pillar in Nollywood, owes much of its cultural grounding to Maami Omoladun, who supported and encouraged her children’s artistic passions. Omoladun’s influence, described by family friends as deeply rooted in tradition and spirituality, had always inspired Kunle’s creative direction and the family’s engagement with storytelling that honors their Yoruba heritage.

Kunle Afolayan, celebrated for directing award-winning films like The Figurine and October 1, often mentioned his mother’s support as fundamental to his journey in the film industry. Her wisdom and values permeate his work, grounding his modern narratives in cultural integrity, a sentiment he attributes to her strong influence.

As tributes pour in from across Nollywood and fans worldwide, the Afolayan family is planning a quiet, private remembrance before announcing public memorial details. As Kunle and Gabriel continue to receive condolences, they prepare to honor their mother’s legacy in a way that celebrates her life and the family values she instilled in them.

The Nollywood community mourns alongside the family, paying homage to the woman who nurtured a lineage of creative talents, a legacy now etched in the memories and screens of millions.
