Flood Displaces Over 600 Households in Anambra as Water Level Rises, Communities Seek Relief

In Anambra State, residents of over 600 homes in flood-prone areas have been displaced due to rising water levels from the River Niger, which have submerged houses, roads, schools, and other facilities. Communities across five Local Government Areas—Anambra West, Anambra East, Ogbaru, Awka North, and Ayamelum—are facing severe flooding, prompting many residents to evacuate to higher ground or designated Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

In the Mmiata-Anam community, Anambra West LGA, residents were seen using wooden canoes to navigate flooded areas. Teacher Nneka Chimaobi described the rapid escalation of the floodwaters, which began only days ago but have since overtaken public and private properties. “Most people have already evacuated, leaving behind those who are still trying to secure their belongings,” she said, adding that the closure of schools has allowed residents to relocate to safer grounds.

A video circulating on social media shows Anambra West Local Government Deputy Chairman, Mrs. Edith Ndive, traveling to her house by canoe. Last year, a boat accident on the Mmiata-Anam river claimed over 40 lives as high water levels caused the vessel to strike a bridge, resulting in a tragic capsizing.

Anambra’s Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, confirmed that the state government is actively responding, alongside agencies such as NEMA, SEMA, the International Organization for Migration, and the Red Cross Society. They have established over 27 IDP camps, provided relief materials, and continue to monitor water levels closely. Odimegwu noted that the state has distributed essential items, including food supplies donated by the Bank of Industry, to assist displaced residents.

To mitigate future flooding impacts, Odimegwu emphasized the state’s enhanced preparedness this year, with regular early warning alerts every two days to inform residents of rising water levels.
