In a candid and emotional interview, Nollywood actress and producer Ufuoma McDermott revealed her challenging 12-year battle with chronic kidney disease, which reached a life-threatening Stage 4 in 2023. Speaking with media personality Chude Jideonwo, McDermott shared insights into her health struggles and the toll her condition has taken on her physical and mental well-being. She also discussed how her ordeal began with the tragic loss of her younger brother to kidney disease, followed by her own diagnosis.
McDermott disclosed that she was first diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney disease but postponed treatment, attributing her delay to fears and a lack of understanding about the disease’s progression. Unfortunately, her condition worsened, progressing to Stage 4—an advanced stage that brought her close to losing her life.
“I had been pushing my body for years, relying heavily on painkillers to manage chronic pain,” McDermott explained. “This past year, I hit a point where I genuinely thought I might not survive. It’s been one of the most trying times of my life.”
She admitted that her prolonged use of painkillers without proper medical supervision significantly impacted her kidneys, gradually leading to the disease’s progression. By 2023, McDermott had reached what she described as a “breaking point,” requiring her to re-evaluate her approach to health and seek immediate, comprehensive medical treatment.
The interview highlighted McDermott’s journey through pain, fear, and hope, as she recounted the emotional and physical challenges of managing a chronic illness. She hopes her story will serve as a warning to others about the dangers of self-medicating and delaying necessary medical care.
McDermott’s revelations have struck a chord with many, offering insight into the often-hidden battles faced by those with chronic illnesses. Her story not only sheds light on kidney disease awareness but also underscores the importance of regular medical checkups and the need for mental resilience in facing long-term health battles.
