Defending Champion Angelique Kerber Knocked Out of Wimbledon

Angelique Kerber’s bid to defend her Wimbledon singles title came to an unexpected early end on Thursday as she was defeated by American lucky loser Lauren Davis in the second round, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The 31-year-old German, who entered the tournament in strong form after reaching the final at Eastbourne, suffered her earliest exit at Wimbledon since 2013. Despite a dominant first set, Kerber struggled to maintain her momentum as Davis mounted an impressive comeback.

Davis, ranked 95th in the world, has now matched her best Wimbledon performance by reaching the third round, where she will face Spain’s 30th seed, Carla Suarez Navarro, for a spot in the last 16.
