The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has insisted that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf must adhere strictly to party procedures should he decide to leave the party.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Kano on Tuesday, the NNPP State Chairman, Senator Elmasud Doguwa, said the party would not obstruct the governor’s decision to defect, provided he follows the rules guiding party membership.
According to him, Governor Yusuf is required to submit a formal letter of resignation to the legally recognised NNPP before aligning with any other political platform.
Doguwa stressed that the party has no intention of forcing the governor to remain if he no longer wishes to continue under its banner, but noted that due process must be respected.
His comments come against the backdrop of widespread speculation that the governor, who won the 2023 election on the NNPP platform, may be considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains a legitimate member of the NNPP, the party identified by the basket of fruits symbol,” Doguwa said. “We acknowledge him as our governor and as a member of our party. However, if he chooses to leave, that is his constitutional right. What we insist on is a formal resignation, which has not been submitted to us.”
He explained that while political affiliation is a personal choice, such decisions must align with the party’s constitution and established procedures.
The NNPP chairman also cautioned that bypassing the formal resignation process could attract legal implications, especially given the ongoing court cases surrounding the party’s leadership structure.
“In view of the judgments already handed down by three courts, any defection without a proper resignation from the bona fide NNPP may have consequences, particularly if the Supreme Court eventually rules in our favour,” he warned.

Doguwa reiterated that the current NNPP leadership in Kano is the legitimate authority based on existing court decisions. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold and enforce the judgments delivered by the courts.
“We urge INEC to respect and implement all court rulings issued last year on this matter,” he said.
