Senate Summons Education Minister, WAEC Boss Over 2026 SSCE Curriculum Changes

The Nigerian Senate has called on the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, and the Head of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Amos Dangut, to appear before it following concerns over abrupt changes to the 2025/2026 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).

The resolution came after Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West) raised a motion on Tuesday under Orders 41 and 51, highlighting the “urgent national matter.” Karimi expressed alarm at the sudden imposition of a new curriculum on students who have not been adequately prepared.

“The policy was originally intended to begin with students currently in SS1, who will sit WAEC in 2027/2028,” Karimi said. “Yet it is now being applied prematurely to SS3 students scheduled for the May/June 2026 exams. These students will be required to take two or three additional subjects they have not been taught.”

Backing the motion, Senator Adams Oshiomhole described the rollout as reckless and poorly planned. “We cannot wake up with an idea and immediately implement it. For a new subject to begin, citizens must be informed, teachers trained, and laboratories ready. None of this has been done. We risk national embarrassment,” he said.

Similarly, Senator Idiat Adebule (APC, Lagos West) stressed that such a major policy change should have gone through the National Council on Education for proper deliberation and approval. Senator Solomon Adeola (APC, Ogun West) added that it would be academically unfair to examine students on content they have not been taught.

After thorough deliberations, the Senate resolved to summon both the Education Minister and the WAEC Head for a public hearing before the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education. Lawmakers also recommended that current SS3 students be exempted from the 2026 WAEC under the new guidelines, and that the revised curriculum take effect only for students currently in SS1.
