Presidency Confirms Finance Minister Wale Edun Is Recovering at Home

The Presidency has formally addressed concerns surrounding the health of Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, stating that he is currently recovering at his Abuja residence following a brief illness.

In response to swirling speculation about his condition, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Mr. Sunday Dare, confirmed on Monday that the minister is indisposed but recovering steadily.

“I spoke with the Honourable Minister on the phone. He was in good spirits and assured me that he is getting better,” Dare stated.

No Stroke, No Medical Evacuation

Contrary to reports circulating on social media and some news platforms, the Presidency firmly denied claims that Edun suffered a stroke or was flown abroad for emergency treatment.

Sources within the administration dismissed the rumours as “unfounded,” urging the public to rely on verified information.

“There is no truth to suggestions of a stroke or overseas treatment,” a senior official at the Ministry of Finance said.

No Plans to Replace Edun

The Presidency also dispelled claims that President Bola Tinubu is considering replacing the finance minister due to health concerns.

Government sources clarified that Mr. Edun remains fully in office, and no discussion of succession has taken place.

“His absence is temporary and due to health reasons. The President has full confidence in his leadership,” the source added.

Cardoso to Lead Nigeria’s IMF, World Bank Delegation

As a result of the minister’s ongoing recovery, Nigeria’s delegation to the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., will now be led by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, who also serves as the country’s Alternate Governor at the IMF.

The Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, is also expected to participate in the high-level meetings.

These meetings, which begin later this week, are critical for discussions on global financial stability, economic reform strategies, and Nigeria’s ongoing fiscal adjustments.

Public Assurances and Institutional Continuity

Wale Edun, a key architect of the Tinubu administration’s economic reform agenda, has played a leading role in recent fiscal restructuring efforts, including fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate reforms, and engagement with international lenders.

His temporary absence has stirred public interest given his prominent position.

However, the Presidency emphasized that institutional processes remain intact, and the economic team continues to function without disruption.
