Nigeria Submits Bid to Host Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially submitted a bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Abuja, marking a significant step toward bringing the world’s most prestigious motor racing event to West Africa.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, who stated that Nigeria’s application had been formally lodged with the Formula 1 governing authorities.

The bid is part of the government’s broader efforts to reposition the sports sector as a key driver of economic growth under the “Renewed Hope for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE)” initiative.

According to officials, the proposed Grand Prix would take place on a purpose-built circuit in the Federal Capital Territory, designed to meet global FIA standards for safety and performance.

Stakeholder Engagement

The government has designated Opus Racing Promotions as its official local partner for the project. The promoters are expected to work with international stakeholders, including Formula 1 Management (FOM), the FIA, and global circuit designers such as Tilke Engineers & Architects.

The bid also includes planned engagements with key F1 personalities, including CEO Stefano Domenicali and multiple world champion Lewis Hamilton, who have been invited to Abuja to assess the potential of the project and meet with both public and private sector representatives.

Potential Impact

Officials say the project, if approved, could serve as a catalyst for economic development through tourism, job creation, infrastructure expansion, and increased global visibility for Nigeria.

The proposal emphasizes not only the sporting spectacle but also the anticipated socio-economic benefits of hosting a world-class event.

If successful, Nigeria would become the first African country to host a Formula 1 race since South Africa in 1993.

The Competition

Nigeria’s bid enters a competitive process, with other African countries such as South Africa and Rwanda reportedly also exploring hosting opportunities. No final decision has been made by Formula 1 Management regarding the inclusion of an African race on the calendar.

There is currently no confirmed date for the event, as the bid is still under review.

The approval process is expected to involve a comprehensive assessment of Nigeria’s infrastructure, financial readiness, and long-term viability.

Government officials have reiterated their commitment to meeting all requirements necessary to secure the hosting rights.
