Oyo State Governor Seyi Makindehas inaugurated an 11‑member committee to oversee preparations for the state’s upcoming 50th anniversary (Oyo at 50) celebrations.
In a formal letter signed by the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi, retired House of Representatives member Saheed Fijabi was appointed as Chairman of the anniversary planning committee. The committee is to begin work immediately.
Mrs. Ololade Agboola, former Head of Service of Oyo State, was named Deputy Chairman. Other members include Z. O. Ajuwon, Mustapha Areo, Fatimah Azeez, S. A. Adejumo, John Alabi, A. K. Bello, and Fatai Owoseni (a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police). Ronke Adedayo will serve as Secretary, while Samuel Badejo, the Director‑General of Protocol, was also named.
The letter emphasized that the appointments take effect immediately.
Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976. Initially carved from the old Western State, it once included the territory now known as Osun State until August 1991.
Over its five decades, it has evolved into a center for commerce, culture, education, and governance in Nigeria’s South West.

The 50th anniversary is expected to highlight the state’s milestones in infrastructure, education, economic growth, cultural heritage, and its development trajectory moving forward.
