2027 Election: What Peter Obi and Obasanjo Discussed in Abeokuta

Peter Obi and Obasanjo

In the ever-fluid world of Nigerian politics, power often shifts not just at campaign rallies but behind closed doors in private residences. On Monday, that familiar script played out again in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where former President Olusegun Obasanjo hosted Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

The meeting, which has already set tongues wagging in political circles, comes as the countdown to the 2027 general elections gathers quiet momentum.

Peter Obi, accompanied by close political allies, was received warmly by Obasanjo at his Hilltop residence, a location long regarded as a hub for political consultations and strategic realignments.

Sources familiar with the talks disclosed that discussions revolved around Nigeria’s worsening economic climate, leadership deficiencies, and the urgent need for governance reforms.

Behind The Scene

Providing insight into the meeting, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, confirmed in an interview with Vanguard that the meeting was part of the widening consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Tanko, it was a meeting of like minds, which centred on how to rescue the nation and make Nigerians realise that their rights include their power to vote.

He said, “First, it was a meeting of like minds. Remember Mr Peter Obi served under the leadership of Chief Obasanjo at a point in time, so, there was need for the two of them to sit and discuss how to rescue the country.

“It was also a need to make people realise that their rights are in their power of votes. These are basic issues on the state of the nation. These are the things and issues discussed.”

While details remain guarded, it was learnt that Obasanjo stressed the importance of “selfless leadership,” while Obi emphasised the necessity of collective action and unity to salvage Nigeria.

2027 Endorsement

The meeting is already stirring speculation about potential alliances and Obasanjo’s role as a political influencer ahead of 2027.

Observers note that the former president has a history of lending his voice and support to candidates he believes can reset Nigeria’s leadership direction, as seen in 2015 and again in 2019.

For Obi, whose strong showing in the 2023 polls solidified him as a formidable force, the visit underscores his ongoing consultations with elder statesmen and stakeholders as he positions himself for another possible run.

Political analysts argue that Obasanjo’s endorsement, if secured, could carry symbolic weight and energize Obi’s base, particularly among undecided voters.

While neither camp has officially confirmed the political undertones, Monday’s meeting is being widely interpreted as part of the early maneuvering that typically precedes Nigeria’s high-stakes presidential race.
