Trump’s Goal: No Taxes for Americans Earning Below $150,000

Trump Administration Proposes New Travel Ban Affecting 43 Countries

United States Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has stated that President Donald Trump aims to eliminate income tax for Americans earning under $150,000 per year.

Speaking to CBS on March 12, Lutnick outlined the administration’s vision for tax reform.

“How about no tax on tips? No tax on overtime? No Social Security taxes? These are the kind of ideas that will change America,” Lutnick said.

“I know Trump’s goal—no tax for anybody earning less than $150,000 per year. That’s what I’m working for.”

Social Media Reactions: Supporters Praise, Critics Question

Lutnick’s statement sparked mixed reactions on social media.

Republican supporters and conservatives celebrated the proposal, calling it a historic tax cut for the middle class.

One user wrote, “This could be one of the most popular laws in US history.”

Another called it “the biggest middle-class tax cut in history,” saying it would help Americans keep more of their earnings.

Some users reacted with excitement over the potential savings, posting, “Oh sh*t, I fit in that category!” and “That would be amazing!!”

Critics Raise Legal and Economic Concerns

However, some expressed concerns about legality and fairness.

One user questioned its constitutionality, stating:

“Would such a law be constitutional? Federal law must treat all groups fairly. Creating a tax-free class below $150,000 could be legally questionable.”

Another asked: “Why stop at $150,000? Why not $250,000? What would happen to the tax rate just above $150,000?”

Trump’s Longstanding Position on Taxes

Trump has previously expressed support for reducing or eliminating income taxes for Americans.

During the 2025 Republican Issues Conference at the Trump National Doral in Miami on January 27, he argued for replacing income tax with tariffs on foreign countries.

“It’s time for the US to return to the system that made us richer and more powerful,” Trump said.

He added that the US should tax foreign nations instead of taxing its own citizens.

“Instead of taxing our people to enrich foreign countries, we should be tariffing and taxing foreign nations to enrich our citizens. Does that make sense?” he asked, to cheers from the audience.

Tariff Wars and Global Trade Tensions

The Trump administration has already imposed tariffs on key trading partners, including Canada, the EU, and China.

These measures have led to retaliatory tariffs from affected nations, sparking concerns about rising costs for American businesses and consumers.

While Trump’s tax and trade policies continue to spark debate, the prospect of a major tax overhaul remains one of the most closely watched economic proposals in the US.
