Microsoft has announced a significant investment of $1 million over the next two years to advance Artificial Intelligence (AI) skill development for one million Nigerians. This initiative is part of the company’s broader effort to drive digital innovation and economic empowerment across the country.
The announcement was made by Microsoft’s Country Manager for Nigeria, Ola Williams, during the Microsoft AI Tour launch in Lagos. She emphasized the importance of equipping Nigerians with AI skills that will not only enable them to use AI but also to develop groundbreaking solutions and build sustainable AI-driven businesses.
Empowering Nigeria’s Workforce for AI Innovation
Williams described the initiative as a strategic investment aimed at positioning Nigeria as a major player in the global AI ecosystem. By equipping individuals with expertise in AI, Microsoft seeks to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic competitiveness.

“We will continue to partner with stakeholders to ensure that this skilling platform remains available to everyone eager to take advantage of it,” Williams added.

“I am personally excited about bringing AI to Nigeria. We’ve seen AI adoption grow globally, but it is critical to focus on Africa, which is my area of responsibility. Our key markets—Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya—are central to this effort,” Barnard said.

Microsoft has been operating in Africa for over 30 years, but it was only two years ago that the company consolidated its African operations under a unified leadership team. “Our vision for Africa revolves around driving inclusive and sustainable economic growth by leveraging Microsoft’s technology to create new opportunities. During the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the digital transformation era, Africa participated, but not in a bold way. Now, with the Fifth Industrial Revolution—centred on AI—we see a chance to accelerate our progress,” Barnard added.
Microsoft has already launched similar AI training initiatives in South Africa as part of its AI Tour, reinforcing its long-term commitment to talent development across the continent.

As AI continues to reshape industries worldwide, there is an increasing demand for professionals with advanced AI skills. However, many AI-related job roles remain unfilled due to a shortage of skilled professionals. “There is a lot of exciting work happening in Nigeria, especially in the financial services sector. We are collaborating with banks and other partners to harness AI’s potential.
