The Ogun State Police Command has rejected claims made by controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, that he is undergoing psychiatric treatment, affirming that he remains a wanted man.
Portable, in a video shared on Tuesday, declared that he is a “madman” and is receiving treatment at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta. His statement came as an appeal to Nigerians and the Ogun State Government following his wanted status issued by the state police command.
Police Dismiss Portable’s Claims, Insist He Must Face Investigation
Speaking to Frontpage Metro on Tuesday, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, dismissed Portable’s claims of being in psychiatric care, stating that the singer must turn himself in for investigation.
“Portable will come and submit himself. He cannot be in the psychiatric hospital in Aro. Everybody knows that he is a wanted person. So, if he is going to be in anybody’s facility, the police will not accept that. He is a wanted man,” Odutola said.
Why Portable Was Declared Wanted
The Ogun State Police Command declared Portable wanted following a violent altercation involving three officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Ota Zonal Office. The victims, identified as:
- TPL Onabanjo Abidemi
- TPL Raymond Lateef
- TPL Ridwan Oyero Akinlesi
…were reportedly attacked by Portable and nine armed thugs during an enforcement exercise at Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu Ota, Ogun State.
Details of the Alleged Attack
According to the officials, they first met Portable’s father at Odogwu Bar, where he informed them that his son was unavailable. However, moments later, Portable allegedly arrived at the scene armed with a firearm and, alongside his gang, launched an attack on the unarmed government officials.
The police report states that the victims sustained injuries before managing to escape and report the attack at the Ota Area Command. The case was later escalated to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), leading to the arrest of nine of Portable’s accomplices. However, the singer himself reportedly fled the scene and has remained in hiding since then.
Repeated Police Invitations Ignored
According to Odutola, the police had sent multiple formal invitations to Portable, requesting his presence at the command’s headquarters. However, the singer ignored all invitations without providing any legal representation.
“Following his repeated evasion, the Ogun State Police Command has obtained a valid court order declaring him wanted,” Odutola confirmed.
Portable’s Response: Claims of Being Set Up and Mental Instability
Reacting to the allegations, Portable went on an Instagram rant on Tuesday, claiming he was being set up due to his association with Senator Adeola Solomon, popularly known as Yayi. He also insisted that he has a history of mental illness, referencing his alleged treatment at Aro Psychiatric Hospital.
“I fear government. I am Federal Government liability. I am a madman; I have medications that I usually take. You can confirm from Aro Hospital. I have a card that certifies me as one of their patients.
“I am from Abeokuta, and they are taking care of me there. I am not a thief; I help people around me without even looking at their background.”
Senator Yayi’s Aide Distances Lawmaker from Portable’s Case
Amid Portable’s name-dropping of Senator Adeola Solomon (Yayi), the Special Assistant to the Senator on New Media, Damilare Oloyede, has distanced his principal from the singer’s predicament.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Oloyede criticized Portable for attempting to evade justice by associating himself with the senator.
“Portable should be responsible for once. Senator Yayi won’t help him in this predicament that’s purely a result of his irresponsibility, lack of decorum, and sheer display of lunacy (as confirmed by himself). How does one think name-dropping Senator Yayi would help evade justice after being declared wanted by law enforcement agencies?”
Oloyede reiterated that Senator Yayi is a law-abiding public servant who does not tolerate criminal behavior.
“For the umpteenth time, Senator Yayi is a responsible leader to his constituents, followers, and admirers. Hence, he won’t, can’t, and will never tolerate irresponsible acts around him.”
What Happens Next?
- The Ogun State Police has reaffirmed its commitment to arresting Portable, regardless of his claims.
- Investigations into the attack on government officials remain ongoing.
- Authorities warn that attempts to evade justice using psychiatric claims will not be entertained.
Portable’s next move remains uncertain, but his legal troubles continue to mount as police intensify efforts to bring him in for questioning.
