The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially sanctioned five airlines for various regulatory infractions, issuing formal penalty letters and warning of further punitive actions.
Airlines Affected and Nature of Infractions
The sanctioned airlines include:
- Royal Air Maroc
- Ethiopian Airlines
- Arik Air
- Aero Contractors
- Air Peace
The Director for Consumer Protection and Public Affairs at the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, confirmed that all five airlines have received their official sanction letters. However, investigations into their operations are ongoing, with the possibility of additional fines and penalties.
Potential Additional Fines and Stricter Actions
Achimugu revealed that the NCAA is currently gathering further evidence and monitoring the airlines closely. If continued infractions are confirmed, the agency is considering fines of up to ₦200 million, a record penalty in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
“We are still monitoring the situation and gathering more evidence. These airlines could face even stiffer penalties if violations persist,” Achimugu stated.
Regulatory Violations and Passenger Complaints
The NCAA’s enforcement actions follow an increase in passenger complaints, particularly regarding airlines failing to process refunds within the timeframe specified in Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023.
Among the five sanctioned airlines, Royal Air Maroc faces the harshest penalty, with a possible ₦300 million fine for alleged unprofessional conduct and non-compliance with regulatory standards. If enforced, this would mark the largest financial sanction in Nigerian aviation history.
Airlines’ Response and Next Steps
So far, none of the affected airlines have responded to official inquiries regarding the sanctions. The NCAA, however, maintains that it remains committed to protecting passenger rights and ensuring strict compliance with aviation regulations.
As investigations continue, the regulatory agency has assured that any airline failing to adhere to established consumer protection guidelines will face further punitive measures.
