Traditional Ruler Abducted by Suspected Kidnappers in Edo State

Suspected kidnappers on Sunday night abducted the Onogie of Udo-Eguare, a traditional ruler in Igueben Local Government Area, Edo Central, Edo State. The incident was confirmed in a statement issued by the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu.

Abduction and Murder of Okada Rider

According to the police statement, the traditional ruler was ambushed while traveling as a passenger on a motorcycle. The motorcyclist (Okada rider) was shot dead at the scene, while the Onogie was forcibly taken by the armed assailants.

Yamu further revealed that the number of other abducted individuals remains uncertain at the time of reporting.

“The command has received a report of the unfortunate kidnapping of some persons, including the Onogie of Udo-Eguare, a 21-year-old man, late on Sunday night. He was traveling on a motorcycle along a remote path leading to his community, where they were ambushed by unknown gunmen. In the process, the Okada rider was shot dead, and the Onogie was abducted,” the statement read.

 

Police Response and Tactical Operations

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Betty Otimenyin, has ordered the immediate deployment of tactical police units, including the Police Mobile Force, to the area to ensure the rescue of the kidnapped victims and the arrest of the perpetrators.

“The Area Commander is personally on ground, leading the operation as directed by the Commissioner of Police,” the statement confirmed.

 

Ongoing Investigation and Search Efforts

The Edo State Police Command has assured the public that efforts are underway to track down the kidnappers and secure the release of the abducted traditional ruler and others. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could aid in the ongoing investigations.

This incident highlights the increasing cases of insecurity in certain regions of Edo State, raising concerns among local communities over safety and law enforcement effectiveness. The police continue to urge calm while assuring that every effort is being made to rescue the victims unharmed.
