Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has sent a powerful message to Nigeria’s national team ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon on Thursday in Rabat, Morocco.

Speaking on his Obi One Podcast Channel, the Chelsea legend emphasized that the players must approach the game with unwavering confidence, courage, and pride in representing over 300 million Nigerians.

“Go into the game and play with full confidence, bravery, and passion,” Mikel said. “When you wear the green and white, it’s not just a shirt — it’s a symbol of a nation. 300 million people are behind you. That’s pressure, yes, but it’s also power. You have to carry that responsibility with pride. I know they can do it, and I believe in them.”

The encounter in Morocco marks a pivotal moment for Nigeria, who are aiming to secure a place in the playoff final on Sunday. The winner between Nigeria and Gabon will face either Cameroon or DR Congo for a spot in the next stage of World Cup qualification.

The Super Eagles come into the fixture with momentum, having recently defeated Benin in their previous qualifier, while Gabon earned their playoff berth after overcoming Burundi. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Nigerian time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Meanwhile, midfielder Alex Iwobi has praised Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who took charge of the team in January and has guided Nigeria through an impressive unbeaten run — six competitive matches without defeat, including four wins.

The Everton star spoke glowingly about Chelle’s impact on team spirit and mentality, describing him as more than just a coach.

“He’s such a great man,” Iwobi said. “We almost don’t see him as a manager — he’s like a big brother. He’s created a real sense of brotherhood within the squad. You see him on the touchline, full of emotion and energy, fighting for us. That drives us to give everything, not just for Nigeria, but for him too.”

With leadership from the sidelines and belief from icons like Mikel Obi, the Super Eagles are expected to enter Thursday’s showdown with renewed focus and determination — as they chase another step.
