A tragic road accident has claimed the lives of at least 12 people along the Kano–Gombe highway near Darki town in Wudil Local Government Area, Kano State, following a collision between a passenger bus belonging to the Kano Line transport company and a petroleum tanker.
According to reports from eyewitnesses and the transport company’s management, the tanker, engaged on a road construction assignment, made a sudden turn across the bus’s path.
The bus was unable to avoid the truck and crashed into it, leading to multiple fatalities on the spot.
The managing director of Kano Line confirmed that of the 16 passengers onboard, 12 died instantly — including two of the company’s drivers identified as Alhaji Sabo and Alhaji Dan Azumi.
Five other passengers, four women and one man, were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

In a statement, the company expressed profound sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the families of the deceased and to the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf. It also called for stronger road-safety enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the crash — including whether the tanker’s manoeuvre was authorised and whether speed, road conditions or driver fatigue played any part.
Looking Ahead
As the investigation continues, stakeholders including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and transport unions will no doubt examine the regulatory framework around heavy-vehicle operations, construction-site traffic management and passenger-bus safety in northern Nigeria.
