The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 12 suspects in connection with the brutal killing of an Arise Television anchor and a private security guard in Abuja.
The arrest, made during a series of coordinated raids, comes just days after the victims were found dead under suspicious circumstances at a residential compound in the city.
According to the police, preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may have been premeditated, though the exact motive remains under scrutiny.
“We have arrested 12 individuals who are now assisting us with the investigation,” said FCT Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh. “Our officers acted swiftly following intelligence that linked the suspects to the crime scene. Further details will be released in due course.”
Background of the Case
The incident, which sparked widespread shock and condemnation across media circles, reportedly took place earlier this week at an estate in the Galadimawa area of Abuja.
The late Arise TV staff member — whose identity has not yet been formally disclosed pending family notification — was found alongside a slain security guard, believed to have been employed at the residence.
Both bodies were recovered and taken to the morgue by authorities.
Neighbors reportedly alerted the police after hearing gunshots and unusual activity during the early morning hours.
Police Investigation and Forensics Underway
The FCT Command has deployed homicide detectives and forensic experts to analyze the scene.
Weapons and other items of interest were recovered during search operations, though police declined to give specifics, citing the sensitivity of the investigation.
The suspects, whose identities are currently being withheld, are expected to face formal charges once investigations are concluded.
Sources within the police say the case may be transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) for deeper analysis.
“This is not just about bringing killers to justice — it’s about safeguarding the freedom and safety of every law-abiding Nigerian,” said a senior police official familiar with the probe.
Media Community Demands Protection, Transparency
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and other media advocacy groups have condemned the killings, calling them a direct attack on press freedom.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NUJ urged the Inspector-General of Police to ensure transparency in the handling of the case, and to implement stronger protective measures for journalists across the country.
“This heinous act must not go unpunished,” the NUJ said. “We demand not just arrests but prosecutions and convictions. Journalists cannot continue to operate under fear.”
Public Outrage and Calls for Justice
The tragic deaths have reignited concerns about insecurity in Nigeria’s capital, where a recent surge in violent crimes has put residents on edge.
Civil society groups have called for urgent reform in community policing, surveillance, and intelligence-gathering mechanisms.
